Vale of Rheidol Railway events

The Vale of Rheidol Railway Museum in Aberystwyth hosts special events during the holidays - special train trips, model railway exhibition and a Christmas spectacular.

Pete Waterman's enormous model railway will be visiting the Vale of Rheidol steam museum again this summer.

Check out the Young Engineers's Day in August too

The Vale of Rheidol Railway Museum has an extensive collection of historical narrow gauge locomotives and rolling stock. Many items were collected by the Railway's  late Chairman, Peter Rampton, and the collection as become known as “Collection X”. Exhibits change regularly.

The mighty Garratt No. 60 “Drakensberg” is part of the permanent collection at the Museum and is sometimes seen in operation, in full steam. All three Vale of Rheidol ‘Tank’ engines can be seen, each in a different British Rail livery: No. 7 Owain Glyndŵr in Green, No. 8 Llywelyn in Black and No. 9 Prince of Wales in Blue.

If you are visiting to see a particular locomotive, check the website or contact the Railway in advance to check whether it is on display.

On special event days, visitors get a rare opportunity for a footplate ride on one of the four Vale of Rheidol tank engines  as well as a hands-on driver experience with ‘Wren’ - one of the Railway Museum’s smaller engines.

During the summer, the Engine Shed becomes the home for Pete Waterman's enormous model railway layout of Watford Junction.

The Vale of Rheidol Museum locomotives are moved out to make room in the Engine Shed for the world record breaking Pete Waterman’s 208-foot portable model railway layout. With over half a mile of intricate track, the Making Tracks display is so large it only just fits within the Vale of Rheidol museum’s impressive 212-foot gallery!
